I am married to Carey Meadows and we have three wonderful children and six terrific grandchildren. I am an Opelika native of many generations here in East Alabama. I attended the Opelika City School System, Southern Union State Community College and Auburn University's School of Business. My wife is Kathy Gentle Mitchell, Auburn native. We have three wonderful daughters: Maria (13), Elise (11), and Julia (7) all attending the Opelika School System. I started working at my father's retail sales/service business in downtown Opelika in the early 1970's and became president of the business in the mid 1990's. Meanwhile, I started a second company that manufactured electronic circuit boards for another local manufacturer. As that manufacturer grew, I evolved from retail into manufacturing. After 15 years, the company continues to manufacture many different products, but primarily does consulting for new product development.

Through my hobby of managing our family farm in Lee County, The Alabama Forestry Commission awarded the farm The Alabama Treasured Forest Award for excellence in land management. One of only 1900 farms in the state of Alabama to ever receive this recognition since 1976. John is a native of Lee County and attended Opelika and Auburn public schools and Auburn University. In 1982, John was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives, again in 1983 in a special election, and in 1986 to the Alabama Senate. John has also been an instructor with the American Real Estate Institute for 26 years.

John is the proud father of five boys, Brandon an Opelika Attorney, Blake an AU Civil Engineering Graduate, Rylen Crews (stepson) an AU pharmacy student, John Will age 14 and Jonah age 11.

John's wife Richelle is retired from Auburn University and is a speech therapist.

Son Brandon has one son, Alex. Rylen and wife Jamie have one son, Cohen.

John was one of four original incorporaters for Eagle Bank. He created the Auburn/Opelika Convention and Visitors Bureau and is chairman of the Lee County Industrial Development Authority. He is a member of NFIB, Auburn/Opelika Elks Lodge 1834, Saugahatehee Country Club, First United Methodist Church of Opelika, chairman of the East Alabama Chapter of the Friends of NRA, and a board member of the East Alabama Services for the Elderly.

John is the commissioner of baseball of the Billy Hitchcock Men's Senior Baseball League and is presently involved in redeveloping Opelika's downtown. His related companies are developing subdivisions in Auburn and Opelika and maintains a sales agent force of professionally trained Realtors.

For 20 years John has been the voice of the Friday Night Football Scoreboard Show, the #1 sports show in East Alabama. He the former platform debater for the Tax Accountability Coalition of Alabama which successsfully defeated Bob Riley's Tax Increase of 2003 called Amendment One.

I grew up in South Alabama and attended Livingston State College and Auburn University. I have lived in Opelika for the past 35 years with my husband and two sons. We are members of Trinity United Methodist Church. Our oldest son graduated from Auburn University with a degree in economics and received his MBA from Troy University. Our youngest son attended Southern Union State Community College and is enrolled at Auburn for the fall. After working for United Airlines for 37 years as a flight attendant, I am looking forward to a new career in real estate. I believe that my experience in working with the public will be an asset in this field.
