I am an Opelika native of many generations here in East Alabama. I attended the Opelika City School System, Southern Union State Community College and Auburn University's School of Business. My wife is Kathy Gentle Mitchell, Auburn native. We have three wonderful daughters: Maria (13), Elise (11), and Julia (7) all attending the Opelika School System. I started working at my father's retail sales/service business in downtown Opelika in the early 1970's and became president of the business in the mid 1990's. Meanwhile, I started a second company that manufactured electronic circuit boards for another local manufacturer. As that manufacturer grew, I evolved from retail into manufacturing. After 15 years, the company continues to manufacture many different products, but primarily does consulting for new product development.

Through my hobby of managing our family farm in Lee County, The Alabama Forestry Commission awarded the farm The Alabama Treasured Forest Award for excellence in land management. One of only 1900 farms in the state of Alabama to ever receive this recognition since 1976. John Rice is a native of Lee County and attended Lee County public schools and Auburn University. In 1977 John graduated from the Hall Institute of Real Estate in Hanover, Massachusetts and has served the real estate community for thirty-five years.

For twenty-eight years John has been an instructor with the American Real Estate Institute and has extensive knowledge of real estate listings, sales, development, construction, finance, and property management.

In 1982, John was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives, again in 1983 in a special election, and in 1986 to the Alabama Senate. He is the former platform debater for the Tax Accountability Coalition of Alabama, which successfully defeated Bob Riley's Tax Increase of 2003 called Amendment One.

John's wife Richelle is retired from Auburn University and is a speech therapist. They are proud parents of five boys, Brandon an Opelika Attorney, Blake an Opelika Civil Engineer, Rylen Crews a local Pharmacist, John Will age 16 and Jonah age 13.

John was one of four original incorporators of Eagle Bank, and founded the Auburn/Opelika Convention and Visitors Bureau and is chairman of the Lee County Industrial Development Authority. He is an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Opelika, Auburn/Opelika Elks Lodge 1834, NFIB and a board member of the East Alabama Services for the Elderly.

John is also the commissioner of baseball of the Billy Hitchcock Men's Senior Baseball League. For 20 years John has been the voice of the Friday Night Football Scoreboard Show, the #1 sports show in East Alabama.

John’s immediate and long term plans are the supervision of his real estate company John Rice Realtors and developing subdivisions in the Opelika, Auburn and Lee County area, and the preservation and redevelopment of Opelika's historic downtown district.
